I’ll admit, Valentines Day can be a little over hyped, but I find it all kind of fun. Aside from the unnecessary but welcome excuse to eat exorbitant amounts of chocolate, I also like that it gives me an excuse to dress up and do something fun.
Whether you’re spending quality time with your one true love or hanging out with your BFFs, I’ve put together a few fun outfits to make celebrating February 14th all the more fun.
This Carrie Bradshaw inspired look is perfect for a casual Valentines Day. In true Carrie fashion, I paired this whimsical, girly skirt with a more sophisticated, structured ankle boot. I happen to be a big fan of way grey and soft pinks look together, especial since the gold hardware on the shoe matched the delicate necklace (What’s a Sex and the City inspired ensemble without a name necklace, am I right?)
In the show, she juxtaposed the romantic skirt with a plain white tank top, but I think this “Heart Breaker” tank is especially fun for Valentines day. A soft pink lip color and floral perfume complete this light-hearted V-day look.
I’ve been straight up internet stalking Tavi Gevinson (Editor in Chief of Rookie Mag/ teenage prodigy / my latest fashion muse) and I feel like this V-Day getup is she something she would approve of. It’s a little tongue and cheek, a bit rebellious, and just plain sassy. The patterned skirt pokes fun at the (mostly made up) holiday the white crop top keeps this from looking too over the top (ha, over the “top”) My favorite details are the rose colored glasses (perfect for a daytime stroll with your love) and the powder-blue envelope clutch.
One of my favorite fashion tips is to think of colors in groups rather than separates. In this example, the grey, the pink, and the blue in this look all belong to the same color family, so even though they are different shades, they go together nicely. This is also true with jewel tones and earth tones. Looking at color this way makes it easier to be more adventurous with your outfits because you no longer have to worry about matching perfectly. As long as the colors are in the same family, you’ll be on the right track.
But let’s not forget the star of the show: these white creeper sandals! They’re sole-ly responsible for making this look ultra hip and modern.
As much as I love the other outfits, this is the outfit I would most likely wear on Valentines Day, especially since I live in New York and it’s constantly freezing. I love the subtle nod to V-day with the red sweater and the sexy but understated detail of the caged heels. I would probably wear this with high-waisted black pants with the front of the sweater tucked in to emphasize my waist, but if I was going somewhere a bit more upscale, I would opt for a sleek pencil skirt.
I like to keep my outfits a little more casual and add a touch of glamour with jewelry (like these delicate, midi rings) and by playing up my eye makeup– especially on date night. The combination of comfortable and feminine makes me feel pretty, without looking like I tried too hard.
I think a sexy, smokey eye turns any outfit into a statement. Watch this video to learn the easiest way I know how to pull of this look!
