The Fashion Trick I Wish I Knew Sooner

I like fashion. I think. Probably…

Not enough to know every designer by name or hoard my french fry money to save up for a $3,500 handbag or anything, but I like to look nice.

UntitledjjjnknkMy often lukewarm love affair with fashion is probably responsible for the fact that I just now–like yesterday–learned a fashion “trick” that I think most people probably learn early on: Match your accessories to the statement piece in your outfit.

Let me tell you, it has been life changing (sartorially speaking.)

Prior to learning this, I would have paired this t-shirt and jeans combo with black shoes and my usual black bag. I couldn’t see the potential and fun in the outfit.

But that was so yesterday (literally) and today, my much more enlightened choice of picking out two or three colors from the shirt to accessorize with helped give this casual look a bit more life.

Two things you should keep in mind when using this…um, strategy?

1. Keep the accessories to two or three different colors. More than that could be too overwhelming, making this look disjointed and sloppy.

2. Make sure that the accessory colors are in the same shade family. In the first look, everything is in the same bright primary color family so even though they are different colors, they go together nicely.

I also tested my theory with a more sophisticated night time look, similar to the one I made on my Polyvore, and loved the way it turned out.

This time I played up the grey, gold, and browns in this beautiful pencil skirt. Here you can really see how attention to small details really pull this look together. For example, simply adding a grey purse instead of a basic black bag immediately makes this look more stylish. Also, paying attention to the color on your nails is a small but easy way to take your look to the next level. Pairing this look with a soft nude color as opposed to a bright pink or purple makes this outfit look incredibly polished (ha, see what I did there?)

I love that this trick can be used to make any outfit a bit more fashionable. You can even apply this idea to home decor. Find a piece or art of a statement rug that you adore and match the pillows, candles, and flowers with two or three colors in the design. Insta-chic!

If you use this trick to build your next outfit, snap a picture and tag me on Instagram so I can check it out!
